A. gabunense is only found only in the lower Ogowe and Ngounie River systems in Gabon: it was first collected by W.Herzog, Dick Haas, Bochtler, Gaspers & B.Umfahrer in January 1973 in small and swampy brook in the rainforest between Lambarené and Fougamou along National Road No. 1, about 30 kilometers southeast of Lambarené, western Gabon, 0°50'S, 10°22'E
Also collected on the trip: A. fulgens, A.gabunense , and A.kunzi . No code has been assigned for this collection, but fish that are descendants of that first accession could by convention be called "G73". There are no G73 codes from 1973, but there are G74 and G75 codes.
